Motorcycle Training in Christchurch: Courses, Costs and Dates

Rider cornering during motorcycle training with Ornsby in Christchurch

Chasing your first licence, coming back after a decade off, or trying to stop running wide on Port Hills corners? There’s a course built for every rider and every riding level. The hard part is working out which one is right, what it costs, and when it runs.

Here’s the breakdown, based on current pricing across the South Island.

Quick Answer

  • Licence courses (basic handling skills, CBTA restricted, CBTA full) run $190–$250, depending on whether you need tuition or just the assessment.
  • Ride Forever courses normally cost $20–$50 thanks to ACC funding. They’re free for courses completed between 1 September and 31 December 2026.
  • Skills courses (adventure, track, cornering, one-on-one coaching) start from $155/hour.
  • Dates: most motorcycle training in Christchurch runs weekly year-round, with Ride Forever days clustered on weekends. Book two to four weeks ahead, longer over spring and summer.

What Motorcycle Training in Christchurch Costs

Prices vary more than most riders expect, because motorcycle training in Christchurch covers everything from a 90-minute test to a full day of one-on-one coaching. Ornsby Motorcycle Training offers the following training and assessment options and costs:

Course type OMT Cost Duration
Basic handling skills test (assessment only) $190 1–1.5 hours
Basic handling skills with tuition $250 2–3.5 hours
CBTA restricted (6R) assessment $215 (including fuel levy) 1–1.5 hours riding
CBTA full (6F) assessment $165 (including fuel levy) 25–30 minutes riding
Bike and gear hire $115–$165 Per session
Ride Forever Motorbike Skills / Bronze $20 (free until 31/12/2026) 4 hours – full day
Ride Forever Silver / Gold $50 (free until 31/12/2026) Full day
One-on-one road coaching $155/hour 1.5–4 hours
Advanced roadcraft (full day) $155/hour 7 hours
Adventure or dirt riding intro $155/hour Full day

Those figures sit on top of NZTA’s own theory test, assessment and licence application fees, which are charged separately at a licensing agent. Check current motorbike license price details before you budget, since provider rates and government fees move independently of each other.

Licence Courses: Where Most Riders Start

If you don’t hold a licence yet, your path is set by NZTA and consists of three stages: learner (6L), restricted (6R), and full (6F).

The first step is the basic handling skills test: an off-road assessment of low-speed control. You need the certificate before you can sit your theory test and get your learner licence.

From there, CBTA training is the faster route. Competency-based training and assessment replaces the standard practical test with an assessed ride on real roads, scored against 11 competencies including observation, speed management and road positioning. At the restricted stage, it runs 50–60 minutes across urban and open-road zones; at full licence stage it drops to 25–30 minutes, mostly in higher speed zones.

CBTA cuts the restricted period from 18 months down to 12, and you can sit the 6F assessment once you’ve held your restricted for nine months. Riders who want the full pathway mapped out will find it in our guide to motorbike licensing, and the first stage is covered in detail under the motorbike learners test.

Ride Forever: The Best Value Motorbike Lessons NZ Offers

Ride Forever is ACC’s subsidised rider training programme, delivered by approved providers across the country. Four levels sit on a ladder (Motorbike Skills (Urban Commuter), Bronze, Silver, and Gold), with each one requiring more experience than the last. Bronze suits newer riders on a restricted licence; Gold is a full day of advanced roadcraft for experienced riders.

Normally, these are the cheapest motorbike lessons NZ riders can access, at $20–$50 a course. Until 31 December 2026, they’re free, subject to availability. You can do two courses a year, one of which can be Gold.

Riders who’ve completed a Ride Forever Gold course within the past two years qualify for the ACC Rider Reward: 25% off the ACC Motor Vehicle Account levy on every motorcycle licensed in their name, applied to vehicle licences starting on or after 1 July 2026. There’s no assessment to pass; you just have to complete the day.

Riders who’ve completed a Ride Forever course show a 27% reduction in crash incidence and are up to 50% less likely to lodge a claim.

Motorbike Riding Lessons for Adults Returning to the Road

A large share of bookings now come from riders in their 40s, 50s and 60s buying a bike after 20 years away. The licence is still valid. The reflexes and the bikes have both changed.

Motorbike riding lessons for adults in this position usually run as one-on-one sessions of two to three hours. The focus is different from beginner training: modern braking systems, cornering technique, traffic scanning, and confidence on a heavier bike than the one you learned on. Some providers badge these as “return to riding” or “back to biking” sessions.

Riders moving up to a bigger bike once LAMS restrictions lift benefit from the same format. An hour of coaching on unfamiliar power delivery beats a nervous first ride to Akaroa.

Adventure, Track and Cornering Courses

Once you’re licensed, motorcycle training in Christchurch splits into two specialisations, and Canterbury is well-suited to both.

Adventure and dirt courses teach gravel technique and start from $155/hour. Given how much of the South Island’s best riding is unsealed, this is the course that opens up the most country.

Track-based cornering schools use a circuit to work on lean angle, lines and braking without oncoming traffic. Euromarque Motorsport Park hosts most of the Christchurch options, and it’s the one motorcycle riding course in Christchurch where you can explore a bike’s limits without a ditch on the other side of them.

Motorcycle Training Christchurch Dates: When Courses Run

Ornsby runs licence courses year-round rather than in terms or blocks. Basic handling skills tests and CBTA assessments typically run weekly, often several times a week, and can usually be booked as a time slot rather than a fixed date.

Ride Forever days are the ones that fill. They’re mostly Saturdays and Sundays, capped at small group sizes, and demand climbs sharply from September as the weather improves, which is also when ACC records its peak months for motorcycle injuries. With the free-course window running to 31 December 2026, expect spring and summer dates to book out early.

Two to four weeks’ notice is a safe rule. If you need a specific weekend, make it six.

Choosing the Right Motorcycle Riding Course in Christchurch

Match your motorcycle training to the goal, not the price:

  • No licence yet: basic handling skills with tuition, then CBTA.
  • On your restricted and want your full sooner: CBTA 6F, plus a Ride Forever course to sharpen up first.
  • Returning after years away: one-on-one coaching, then Bronze or Silver.
  • Confident but want to be quicker and safer: Gold, then a track or cornering day.
  • Heading off the seal: an adventure riding course.
