WHAT IS CBTA TRAINING?

The CBTA (Competency-Based Training and Assessment) is the preferred pathway to get your bike licence. Unlike traditional testing, our CBTA course puts you in control by clearly demonstrating what skills you need to master.

We assess your real-world riding competency with practical exercises and road-riding scenarios. Rather than memorising a test route, you develop genuine skills that make you a safer, more confident rider.

At OMT, our NZTA assessors offer CBTA training and the actual assessment, providing you with the CBTA certificate you need to upgrade your licence.

Our lessons thoroughly prepare you for your CBTA in Christchurch, Greymouth, Wanaka, or Invercargill. You’ll work with a certified instructor/assessor who will:

RESTRICTED CBTA

We provide an ACC subsidised Bronze Ride Forever training or one-on-one training to help you prepare for your CBTA and the actual 1-hour assessment, allowing you to progress smoothly from your learners to restricted licence. Once you pass, you’ll get a CBTA certificate to present to an NZTA licensing agent, who will issue your licence.

  • Guide you through all the skills and competencies required for the assessment
  • Develop your hazard perception and defensive riding techniques
  • Offer feedback on improvement areas
  • Build your confidence in different riding situations and conditions

FULL CBTA

We provide ACC-subsidised Ride Forever Silver courses or one-on-one training to help you prepare for your 30-minute CBTA Full Assessment, which is the final step towards total riding freedom. Similar to the restricted assessment, our full CBTA course ensures you have advanced skills to handle more complex riding situations; we’ll help you:

  • Master road positioning techniques
  • Develop superior hazard perception and response
  • Perfect your cornering and handling skills
  • Improve your decision-making in challenging situations
  • Build confidence riding at higher speeds

Once complete, we’ll issue your CBTA certificate, which allows an NZTA agent to issue your full motorcycle licence.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE CBTA?

Preparing for your assessment is all about confidence building. The best preparation for a CBTA assessment is to attend an ACC-subsidised Ride Forever Bronze or Silver course through OMT. These courses clearly cover all the different riding situations and competencies assessed in a CBTA assessment. Here are some additional tips to help you ace your test:
  • Practice makes perfect – the more time you spend on your bike, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel.
  • Consider a pre-assessment lesson – Even experienced riders can benefit from a training session before their CBTA assessment to address improvement areas before test day.
  • Practice slow-speed control – Many riders struggle with slow manoeuvers. Practice slow riding, u-turns, and figure eights in a quiet car park.
  • Check your observation habits – Practice your scanning, mirror use, head checks, and hazard ID until they’re second nature.

A pre-assessment training session can make all the difference between passing and failing. When you take ourCBT training in Canterbury, Otago, Southland, and across the South Island, we will:

  • Assess your current riding skills
  • Consider any areas you need to improve on
  • Work with you to correct bad habits
  • Run through a mock assessment so you know what to expect

We offer Ride Forever Courses and one-on-one training sessions to help you smash your assessment and get your CBTA certificate the first time.

Our CBTA course is just one of two pathways towards getting your motorcycle licence. The other option is taking a traditional practical test at an NZTA testing station. The CBTA pathway is more flexible, teaching valuable skills rather than a standardised route.
