WHY GETTING YOUR MOTORCYCLE PERMIT MATTERS

Let’s be honest—learning to ride isn’t about ticking boxes for a test. It’s about building skills that could literally save your life out on the road. You’re exposed when you’re on a bike, which means you need sharp skills and more awareness than the average driver.

Rather than picking up bad habits from day one of getting your motorcycle driver’s licence (which are incredibly hard to break later), you’ll learn the right techniques from the get-go. No second guessing yourself at intersections or panicking when someone changes lanes; just the calm assurance of knowing what you’re doing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MY LICENCE TEST?

Nerves are normal, but with our help, you’ll know what’s coming. The BHST is typically about 20-30 minutes long. This bike licence test(BHST—Basic Handling Skills Test) gets you to show you can handle a motorcycle safely, including:

  • Starting, stopping, and slow riding
  • Figure 8 manoeuvres to show your balance
  • Emergency braking without skidding or losing control
  • Proper head checks and indicating

Once you pass your BHST, you’ll need to take the certificate to an approved NZTA licensing agent, who will process your application and administer the theory test before issuing your learner’s licence.

For the following restricted and full motorcycle licence exam/CBTA Assessment, you’ll be taking your skills to the road, focusing on your ability to ride safely in traffic, make good decisions, and demonstrate defensive riding techniques. Don’t worry—our ACC-subsidised Ride Forever group courses or one-on-one training sessions will prepare you for what your instructor will be looking for.

Don’t stress—it happens to the best of us! Failing isn’t the end of the road; it’s just a detour. If you don’t pass your test/assessment the first time, we can set up some focused practice sessions that target your weaknesses.

Many riders sail through their second attempt with our targeted training approaches. The trick? Don’t wait too long before trying again—your muscle memory is strongest right after training, so it’s wise to book your test/assessment while everything’s fresh.
